Formula Feeding Fail

We’re one week into no frozen milk stash. Which has meant one week of Zach & Lucy receiving bottles with half {or more} formula. And it hasn’t gone well.

We did luck into finding their preemie formula on sale at our local grocery store BOGO last week. After coupons, I spent $73 for 12 cans. So we’re fairly committed to staying with Gerber Good Start Nourish.

I’d hoped they’d get around 4 oz of my milk & we’d top off the other 2 oz with formula. But my supply over the last week has meant we’re doing the opposite.

And Lucy & Zach are mad.

Last Wednesday, they spent most of the day refusing to take their bottles. Which left them cranky & very hungry. I was able to nurse Lucy to full & Zach finally drank close to 10 oz of half/half freshly made bottles from my husband over a four hour span.

So our current goal is to try to increase my supply. I’m taking fenugreek- 3 pills a time breakfast, lunch & dinner. I’m drinking mother’s milk tea throughout the day. I’m drinking more water. My mom’s making me lactation cookies.

I’m wondering if my Freestyle pump isn’t helping matters. I tweeted Medela today & if I don’t get a reply, I’ll call them tomorrow. {*update* they tweeted back for me to call customer service.} My Freestyle came out of the box with one of the tubes bent & cracked. It has still worked up into the last week or two. But as I’m using it more frequently {my borrowed at work PiS had to be given back}, I’m noticing it’s only as strong as it should be if I hold my fingers tightly over the crack. So much for hands free pumping then though. I’m feeling a bit more engorged in this afternoon & can’t get the pump to get it out. It’s very frustrating.

I’m mulling over re-renting the Symphony to see if that would rekick start my supply. And hoping that I’d be able to have my Freestyle fixed during that rental period.

My other thought stems from yalls’ comments in my last formula post about calling the pediatrician about going straight to cows milk for Lucy & maybe Zach. I’ll be honest that I haven’t called the office yet. Been trying to make this switch work for now.

But we’ve had evening wake ups with tummy pains. And Zach hunger pains. And not pooping issues {I bought pears Sunday & have upped their fruit intake overall & taken rice cereal out of their food}.

Babies are stressful in general. But this is very stressful.

Any other advice y’all have for increasing supply?

For getting babies to like formula? We’ve only done mixed bottles for fear that would completely push away the formula only bottles. Should we try that though?

*evening update* I called the pediatrician & talked to a nurse for a while. She said no cows milk etc until at least 12 months which is what I expected. She said to try formula instead of 50/50 more like 75/25 {why I’m trying to up supply}. She also found & put our name on four cans of the Enfamil preemie formula we used to use to see if they like it better. And said to make sure they’re getting bottles before solids so they aren’t full or pushing them aside to go for yogurt or yummy puffs instead.

I also talked to Ann from Triangle Lactation to reserve one of her Symphony pumps {all currently rented}. While we chatted, I mentioned my Freestyle & she disclosed that it was the LCs least favorite. She felt the small motor {which makes it attractive for working moms} also means it can’t be as strong.

So my awesome friend Brandy is letting me borrow her pump in style while I get my Freestyle repaired &/or rent the Symphony. I’m going to add back in a right-after-they-fall-asleep pumping session.

And while I was working {& blogging/tweeting/making phone calls}, Lucy & Zach finished all but one of their bottles today. I’m going to chat with their daytime teachers in the am, continue trying to build supply/pump more & hope & pray they’re starting to get used to the formula.

First Shoes

We were at the mall Saturday looking for a few things for Jason before his CA work trip. The babies & I passed by Stride Rite on our way to get me a CFA lemonade & I walked in when I saw the buy one get one 50% off sneaker sale sign. A lady measured Zach & Lucy saying L should be a 3 & Z a 2.5.

I met up with Jason at Belk {where he didn’t find polos for the deals he’d hoped} & we went back to Stride Rite.

We found a couple pairs for each we liked. And they were out of those. But they agreed to count the girl sandal sneakers as sneakers for L.

The sales lady brought out size 3 khaki shoes for Z {they didn’t have the blue/red sale ones we liked, but I think these will match more}. They don’t make cruiser shoes any smaller because ‘most size 2s aren’t walking’. They hadn’t met our strong, kick ass preemie! Luckily the size 3s aren’t that big & if his feet are anything like the rest of him, he’ll grow into/out of them quick. Y’all he looks so cute in shoes. Like a big boy. He didn’t try to take them off. Instead he cruised & crawled around the store & kept them on until it was bedtime.

They brought out white sneakers in 3W for Lucy as they didn’t have 3s. And they seemed to fit well. But I had us try regular 3s in sneaker sandals. And yep, big baby girl has ‘chubby’ topped feet. The sweet chub poked out of regular 3 sandals. So we found rediculously cute pink, orange & blue flowered shoes & Lucy stood in them! First time we’ve seen her stand. She wore them out of the store. And as seen in all three photos below, she played with & chewed on them all afternoon. Girl loves to mess with her toes!

We’ve gone 11 months almost the whole time in socks alone. But for my cruiser/almost walkers who will soon be playing outside more & more, yesterday was perfect time for their first shoes! I’m happy with them & 50% one & signing up for emails got us 20% off the total made the bottom line a figure J & I were both pleased about! Another milestone, checked off the list!

Zach 11 Months

Oh our Zach has been just awesome this last month. From the photos, I can tell he’s grown up in the past month too.

I ended my 10 month post saying Zach had started waving. So yeah, the waving was waving & also, mostly, signing milk. It took us a few days to figure that out but it’s awesome & pretty handy to know when he’s hungry. I guess he’s used to {& learned it at} daycare signing for bottle. So when he signs milk, he’s asking for a bottle. He gets 3 of those at daycare & depending on him & the evening 1-2 at home. He’ll nurse well with me overnight & in the am.

He’s eating solids so well {I’ve had to start sending more into daycare} & thus growing. I weighed us last night & fully dressed he was over 17 lbs! I’d *love* for that to be true.

He’s jumped from wearing mostly 3-6 mo cloths for the last months into some kinda tight 6 mos clothes & I’ve been introducing 9 mo clothes too! Nine month pjs especially as he’s pretty long. Yay Zach!

Zach 11 months

Zach blew us away this weekend by “walking”! Aka pushing a walker toy around the den. He’s continued getting better pushing toys here & at daycare this week. I’m calling it that he’ll be our first walker!

Happy 11 months Zach!

Lucy: 11 Months

Lucy is our serious baby. She loves to smile & laugh, but it takes her a minute or five to warm up to someone new or someone she hasn’t seen in a little while.

Lucy 11 months
The 11 month sticker was ripped off & eaten immediately. Hence it’s not wore in these photos.

Oh, but Lucy’s smiles & laughs are worth the wait. She’s hilarious & so expressive these days. She thinks clapping is the coolest thing ever. Some mornings, Jason says she claps the whole way to daycare.

She’s our wild child at home & we’ve heard at daycare too. We watch as she keeps an eye on Zach {her favorite playmate} & smirk as she times the perfect moment to steal his toys. Or give him one of her over zealous hugs {this girl can hug something fierce!}.

When she first wakes up, or is tired or sees us at daycare pickup, she loves to snuggle. She’ll tuck her head into your neck & hold your arm tight with hers. It’s so sweet.

Lucy continues to *love* nursing & drinks her daycare bottles well too. She loves sweet foods & will tolerate veggies & proteins if I mix in applesauce or fruit purees. She likes yogurt but is not a fan of cottage cheese. This girl can put away some puffs & yogurt melts & cheerios too!

I’d guess Lucy’s well over 18/19 lbs. I should probably weigh us & see. Some nine month clothes are getting snug on her. The 12 mo clothes & pjs I’ve thrown into our rotation aren’t as oversized as I thought.

Lucy drools like it’s her job. She recently got her third top tooth making her have a total of 5 teeth now. We go through teething friendly bibs & tops on the regular in our attempt to keep her dry. Luckily, teething doesn’t hold her back too bad besides the drooling.

She still wears mostly one size cloth diapers all day & size 3 disposable diapers at night {usually luvs}. Lucy isn’t quite as consist as she used to be on sleeping. Often she’ll sleep from 9-530, nurse then back to sleep until we wake her for school at 730 or keep sleeping on the weekends til 830! But other nights, she’s a light sleeper & hearing brother up at 1 or 2 or 3 will wake her up & no nursing, rocking, walking, snuggling or playing will sooth her back to sleep quickly. Those mornings she & dada {her only & favorite word} will have quality time in the den while Z & I try to keep sleeping.

Speed crawling continues to be her main source of transportation. She will cruise along the couch or coffee table but isn’t super interested in standing or walking yet. But she’s definitely watching Brother & her daycare friends so I don’t think she’ll be far behind.

Lucy is a bit of a girly girl. She doesn’t like her hands dirty when eating. She loves me jewelry & wants it like NOW. After her forcibly ripping off a pair of my hoop earrings, I’ve been going jewelry free recently. I bought clip bows for her growing hair but it’s still a little fine for them.

Happy 11 months my sweet & silly Lucy girl!

Sick Momma Day {Liberating Working Moms}

In a fog of cold medicine & while in bed, I wrote a post for Liberating Working Moms. I’m glad that it makes sense & is filled with {mostly} complete sentenses.

Katherine has posted recently on the importance of us mommas taking our vacation time for ourselves. I love that idea & added it to my hopefully-one-day-sooner-than-later to-do list.

I think as working moms, our meager sick & vacation times are often used up in a flash of sick babies & daycare/school vacations. While those days can be exhausting & tough, we enjoy the snuggles & flurry of activity. But those days are all about our little ones. The time we’ve earned, our time, is rarely used by us, for us.

This past Wednesday, I did something for the first time in my 11 months of motherhood: I called in sick & took all day off for me. Not to play nursemaid to Zach, Lucy nor my husband. {Y’all remember I did that enough to go a little crazy at the beginning of the year?} Yesterday was all me. My first sick momma day.

I’m feeling a little better today thanks to piling myself with hot tea, cough drops & Tylenol cold medicine. And sugar cookies {because cookies make everything better}. I’ve love to hear what you do to make yourself get or stay well when you have a Sick Momma Day of your own.
