Summer Rental & If You Were Here

I promised book reviews for two beach reads weeks ago but am just getting around to it.

As y’all know I’m frugal & typically stick with the library or paperbackswap to receive books. But when I saw the latest Mary Kay Andrews‘ book Summer Rental at Costco, I couldn’t wait. I have adored everything she’s written. Southern, quick light reads but with a little more depth & punch than your average “chick lit”. As you can guess by the title & cover, it’s about friends who put aside their normal everyday lives for a month & take off to Outer Banks. Loved that it’s set in NC & the women are my age so I can definitely relate. I’m even considering hanging on to this one for a re-read {which I rarely do due to lack of space}. Also due to fact that before I’d even open the cover, I spilled a tiny bit of water into it while in my beach bag {thus making it ineligible for PBS}.

If You Were Here is Jen Lancaster‘s new book. This one is harder for me to review because I have triple puffy heart *loved* each & every one of her memoirs. Like laugh-til-I’m-hysterically-crying-&-Moe-&-Husband-are-looking-at-me-funny loved. I wanted so badly to get that with If You Were Here which is her first go at fiction. I heard Jen’s distinctive voice loud & clear, but I kinda missed something. Hard to put my finger on it. While I was fine with it, even enjoyed it, I definitely didn’t love it & for me it fits into that big pile of average “chick lit”. I wanted so badly for this to be more but it just wasn’t for me. But if you’re looking for light-hearted summer reading, it’s fun & Jen’s funny still shines through in parts. I will definitely read what’s next from her though so don’t think I’m off the Jen Lancaster wagon ~ whether or not it’s another stab at fiction.

Unbroken

My book club’s June book was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I finished it Memorial Day weekend at the beach after staying up a couple late nights the week before because I just could not put it down. We’d read a few other novels set in WWII this year. This one is the only work of non-fiction & by far my favorite.

Laura definitely did her research. So much so, that a few of the group didn’t realize it wasn’t fiction until a little way into the book. I say that meaning that it read like a story, not like a boring History textbook. I had not really heard of Louie Zamperini before reading this book. My dad {who’s a bit of a history/war buff} had seen a couple History channel documentaries, but I was reading & learning about his life for the first time.

Louie’s life was can’t-put-down interesting to me from the start. I enjoyed his running stories, how he got into the war, & hearing about life in the Air Force. It was from the plane crash on though that had me hooked. I won’t give much away past that other than say read it. It’s worth the long wait at the library or getting it in hard back if you like to own your book. I’ve already told both my parents to read it soon & my WWII vet grandfather had already been given a copy.

Up next, reviews of the two more fluffy summer reads, If You Were Here & Summer Rental.

Living the Beachy Life

for the weekend at least. This time with some of my favorite ladies. Poe, BA, Kathleen & I caravan’d down Friday night to be greeted by my grandparents & Sara the mrs. We’d bought down just a few things to eat & drink…

Food, Drinks, Friends. Can't beat that for a Friday night.

I read this on ever-eloquent BA’s McFatty post today & thought yes, exactly.

I looked at my girlfriends & we’re all different shapes & sizes.  We’re tall & short & pudgy & thin & we all hate the spare tires around hips.  We’re mothers, we’re expecting, we’re trying, we’re infertile, we’re not quite ready.  We’re tired hard workers, still hoping to cut loose over a road trip & silly jokes.

{pretty sure I’m one of the tall & also the pudgy & we’re trying friend. I’m owning that.}

But you know what I also loved, the support we give & gave each other. The infertile & not-quite-ready that BA mentioned, they were cheering me on from the bathroom as I was doing the progesterone late Friday night. Y’all inserting that is tough when you’re laughing & feeling the love like I was.

Saturday morning, I woke up to the giggle of my Nana & my friends down stairs. We walked a couple miles then beached it up for hours. {Nana snapped these of them loading the cart while I loaded the cooler. Be impressed, we took in all down in one trip.}

Babes heading to the beach

The beach day included books, girly beers, a lunch trip back to the house for pimento cheese sandwiches, fighting with wind-filled umbrellas & a floppy hat for me.

Nothing like sand between your toes

{BA took the far left pic}

We continued reading on the front porch after a snack of more pimento cheese, Kathleen’s hummus & my Costco-bought spinach & artichoke dip.

Dinner was at the Inlet View. The ladies & view were looking good. My blackened fish was great, Sara’s crab legs enjoyed, & Poe & K let me try their mango shrimp {it was yummy!}. We ended up with a free round of drinks due to us being moved around & the rowdy group sitting near us.

Love these Ladies

My new BFF, Skinny Firefly made another appearance after dinner with we were playing Scribblish which is very fun. The relaxation of the beach got to us all & it ended up being an early night.

The beach church service was wonderful again this weekend. A soloist was in town & blessed us with his voice. Poe was making a fabulous breakfast of eggs & sausage & black beans with tortillas when I walked back in the house. Sadly, she & BA headed back home soon after. Sara, K & I walked {to the pier & back this time} then basked in another couple hours of beach sun before making our own ways back home.

My weekend summary~ the beach rocks, my grandparents are so sweet & brave for having us, & y’all, my friends are awesome.

Book Club Girls Night Out

It’s only taken us three years & one of our founding members leaving for my book club friends & I to have a girls night out. Alethea {sadly for me & the rest of book club} is moving to OR soon. We let her decide where the nine of us who could make it would go. She chose one place but they didn’t take reservations, so we switched & met at Humble Pie. We enjoyed margaritas, sangria, craft beer & delicious tapas. I ordered the spinach salad & black bean crepe. I think we shared bites of everything & it was all delicious!

How beautiful are my book club friends?!

After dinner, we decided to check out the new pie place downtown, Pie Bird. Again, I think we got one of each of the sweet pies & shared bites. I enjoyed Key Lime pie, but I would go back again for more the the Cookies & Cream as well as the Icebox Lemon & Strawberry pie.

Looking forward to seeing them again next Wednesday to discuss Unbroken & hopefully to plan another night out soon!

what I’ve read recently

I guess I’ve been having a thing for memoirs.

First came Matt Logelin’s Two Kisses For Maddy which I devored in two days. As in started it on Friday night & finished in Saturday. His was one of the first blogs I followed & back when I started reading three+ years ago recently after his wife Liz died, I read back to the beginning & broke into the ugly cry. Y’all know the ugly cry right ~ crying so hard & so long that you’re read faced & can barely breath much less talk. I was barely two chapters in when the ugly cry began. Matt wrote the book similarly to his blog style which made me feel like a friend right there with him for the journey through the first year of Maddy’s life. Just to put it out there, his use of language is also the same, so be prepared for a few eff bombs.

I loved the book & definitely recommend it, especially if you’ve followed his story or really even if you haven’t. I’m so glad I used my Christmas Amazon giftcard to pre-order this book. Unlike most purchased books that immediately after finishing go to paperback swap, this one is already in my “keep” book shelf. I’d love it if he started writing a follow up for what he’s been up to recently. Oh & I was so excited to find it was even featured in the current People magazine I was reading last Saturday. {I took the photo with my cell & tweeted it to Matt!}

I’d received Wesley the Owl by Stacey O’Brien via paperback swap a while ago. It had sat in my TBR pile for a bit until that photo of the super cute owl cover got me. I read the majority of it while waiting for husband to sell then buy the new Evo. Stacey is a scientist & wild life lover who adopted a baby owl. Wesley considered her his mom, only friend & eventually his mate. Some hilarious, scary & touching events ensue. By now y’all probably know I love owls. I was a little afraid learning so much about them would change my love. While all the mouse eating is gross, if anything, I respect & admire owls even more after reading Stacey’s book. A definite good read for any animal or owl lover.

I preordered Ree Drummond’s The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels at the same time as Matt’s book & they shipped together. I started reading Black Heels on the way down to OIB for Easter weekend. In three hours, I got about a third of the way through. It was both a quick read & also, I couldn’t put it down. I finished it Saturday afternoon while laying out in the sun.

I love Ree’s voice. After reading her blog for years & meeting her last May, I’d felt like I “knew” her. This book, her first memoir, takes you in even further. I loved the romance, her humor, & the poignant retelling of her parent’s crumbling marriage while hers began.

This book too now sits on my keep shelf. I’m hoping Ree’ll make another NC book tour & I can have her sign it & Charlie to match my signed cookbook. 🙂
