I met the Pioneer Woman…

and other also awesome internet ladies that are now friends! In case your not familiar with Ree, the Pioneer Woman, you can meet her here. I’ve added a few of my favorite photos from Beth & Alena & Sara! Here’s the links you to Alena’s post of the signing, while we we’re waiting for group C to be called, & group C meeting the PW. Here’s Beth Anne’s take on the event also. I so enjoyed meeting Sara, Alena, Amy, Sally & Kathleen. It was great to see Beth, Beth Anne, Jenny, Meredith (here’s her PW post), Emilee & Sarah again!

I left work Friday afternoon around 1:45p which was a little later than I wanted. I was making good time on 40/85 until I got pretty close to Concord. Then traffic went from 70 to 20 mph & I really started sweating thinking I’d be late!! I called B at her work to let her know that I might be there a little later than we had planned. After 6 miles of stop & go traffic, we passed a clearing accident (on the other side of the road!) and I made it the rest of the way to Charlotte & Beth’s work without problems. We then met up with 9 other ladies who’d been grubbing & drinking a little at California Pizza Kitchen at Southpark. It was about 515 when we headed over to Joseph Beth Booksellers to get ready to meet Ree!
Since Mom doesn’t read, I’ll tell yall that I picked up a book for her for Mother’s Day & Ree was sweet enough to inscribe it to say Happy Mother’s Day (I’ll have to take & post a photo of her signature!). But I’m getting ahead of myself… Thanks to Sara who picked up tickets weeks ago, we were Group C! They passed out blue cards for us to ask Ree questions: our group asked the age old question: Boxers or Briefs! (For those interested, Marlboro Man wears boxers under his tight Wranglers!) Ree then stood upstairs and answered questions (she anwered ours first!), chatted about sweating, her love of spanx, and she even sang a lil! We waited for VIP 1 & 2 as well as Groups A & B, then it was our turn! We squealed with excitement & ran upstairs. Alena went first & the coolest thing ever~ Ree knew her name before she could say it!! Yay for twitter! She was so sweet & pretty & so skinny! We took a ton of photos individually then of the group with her.We left on such a high: she was awesome, so laid back & normal for someone who’s a celeb! We were all a little hungry after the signing so we walked across the mall to Cheesecake Factory. They told us that for our group of 12 (plus 2 babies), it would be close to 2 hours. We said thanks, but no thanks & headed next door to Maggiano’s which was about to seat us after a 45 min wait. Dinner was yummy & full of great conversation with such awesome women!

Beth & I said our goodbyes after dinner & headed uptown to meet up with Kevin & friends out & about. We went first to Dandelion Market which is conveintly at the base of her building. After a few beers, that place was PACKED! So loud & crazy that we escaped to Zink where we could sit at a table outside and actually chat for a bit. We made it back to her condo & we’re in bed by 2. She took me to Green’s for breakfast before we headed back to her work to pick up my car. As I mentioned below, I then said goodbye & thanks to Beth & hung out with Ma from 11-2. My aunt Martha was also in town visiting my grandparents so it was nice to see her & my Papa as well.

I experienced Charlotte’s IKEA for the first time on my way back to Raleigh. I was going through it pretty quickly ~ it’s so big! I definitely want to go back with Jason to look at some furniture. But yesterday I bought a pillow for our couch, new pillows for the guest bed ($6.99 each!), a new watering pail, a green candle, a hot mit & a few other little things.

Current Reads

I’m trying to get caught up on the books I checked out at the library a couple of weeks ago. I renewed them, but am a little late on a 1 week loan. I made the goal of finishing Not My Daughter this weekend~ I did this afternoon! A former coworker turned me onto Barbara Delinsky’s books. I read Family Tree (about a white couple who’s first child is born with mixed/black skin) first and have since read The Secret Between Us (about an accident with a mother & daughter) & While My Sister Sleeps (about two sisters & what happen if one gets hurt). All have been based in New England and have family & family ties as central themes. The premise for Not My Daughter is that the principal of the small town high school finds out her 17 year old daughter is pregnant on purpose. These books aren’t ones you have to concentrate hard to read, but they are a little more thought provoking than the average “chic lit”.Tonight I started Jodi Picoult’s most recent book, House Rules. It seems to be the story of a family who’s oldest son has Asperger’s & loves forensics. After reading all but one of her books, I know they kinda follow a familiar pattern or twist, but somehow I’m still interested in what happens in each new one that comes out. I tend to like her characters & get hooked in the stories. I think this one will be a pretty quick read~ I’m hoping to have it finished by next weekend so that I can read our book club selection, Midwives, before the 8th. Hope everyone had a good weekend & happy reading!

My To-Be-Read Pile

This is a picture of my current TBR pile. The top two books, The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand & You: Having a Baby by Michael Roizen & Mehmet Oz, I’m reading simultaneously.
I enjoyed Barefoot and requested the two other books by Elin Hilderbrand from the library which both came very quickly. This one is a little less “beachy fun” but I’m enjoying it so far.
I found You at a discount at Walmart & picked it up last week. As a planner & someone who likes to be on top of what’s going on (I’d been looking at wedding magazines/books/websites years before actually wedding planning), I thought it might be a guide for what we hope is to come fairly soon. So far I’ve found You easy to read & a great planning guide. It has good pictures & has given me a heads up what to expect if/when we do become pregnant. I want Jason to read it next (I think he actually might too!).
Next up is An Echo in the Bone which I’ve been waiting a year to read! I plan to start it as soon as I finish The Castaways (hopefully tonight or tomorrow).
Midwives
& The Killer’s Wife are upcoming book club reads. Picture Perfect & The Yada Yada Prayer Group are PBS finds (with waiting lists so I hope to read those in between some of the others so I can re-post them & get others on my waiting list)

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

I’ve been on a Diana Gabaldon kick recently gearing up for the sixth & final Outlander book which I’m still waiting on from the library. I’ve read I believe everything else she has written now since I finished Lord John & the Hand of Devils Monday night. I realized I’m pretty short of my goal of 50 books in 09 so I wanted to start something else.
I’d recently received The Glass Castle from PaperBackSwap. I’d requested it after hearing others recommend it. Its also a different read for me being a memoir instead of fiction. Let’s just say I couldn’t put it down~ I read the whole book Monday after work! I loved how the writer told the story of her life in a way that made you feel like you’d been there yet not in a self-pity type of way. I can’t believe she & her brother & sisters not only survived but have thrived & become normal & successful adults based on the way the grew up. It is easy to forgot that not everyone has things as good as I do/have had and it was good for me to read this and realize this again especially this holiday season. I’m so thankful for my family & the life I’ve been so blessed to have. I’m not sure what else she has written, but I’d love to read more from her.
Next up fro my Christmas holiday week reading: Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, Hoot (ya’ll know I can’t resist an owl book!) by Carl Hiaasen, and The Curious Incident of the dog in the might-time by Mark Haddon.
