Zach: Eight Months

Happy eight months {& two days}, Zacher!

Much like last month, a couple weeks of your seventh month were spent sick. Colds, pink eye, & RSV are not your friends. Thankfully both in VA & for almost the last week, you Pops was able to help take care of you. Pops & you are best buds. Snuggle partners during the day & night. If you can’t be held or with Mommy, your next favorite person is by far your Pops. It’s so cute to see little you with my big Dad.

And speaking of being little. We’re not trying to give you a complex calling you our Little Guy or Little Dude or Little Buddy. At 13 lbs 10.5 oz {as of your follow up doctor appointment Friday}, you are little. Your pediatrician said Wednesday that you’re boarder line in the 1 percentile. But you’re gaining weight & growing so they {& us} aren’t worried.

You get three 5 oz bottles of Mommy’s pumped milk at daycare & nurse with me once in the morning, usually twice in the evening & at least once overnight. We’ve been trying solids for a while & you’re still not a big fan. This month, we started taking purees into daycare to have Miss Ashton & Miss Mercedes feed you there as well. They seem to be having some successes that Mommy doesn’t always have.

Zach 8 mos + 1 day

We have slowly weeded out most all of your 3 month sized clothing. They were getting too short for your long legs. You fit nicely in 3-6 month Old Navy clothes & pjs; Gymboree 3-6 outfits & we’re transitioning you into Carter’s 6 months clothes.

You can still wear all the small & one sized cloth diapers. You’re still wearing size 2 Huggies naturals without issues overnight.

Oh overnight. You’ve been spoiled when sick by getting your way ~ sleeping in bed with Mommy or on the couch with Pops. You sleep so well cuddled next to your people. But transitioning you back into your crib is tough on you. We’re still working on that this week post-RSV. You’re sleeping in five-six hour stretches most nights which I’m so thankful for.

Our guess is that you might skip official crawling & go straight to walking. You love to sit independently & do a great job with it. We started putting a boppy behind you for support but we don’t have to do that anymore. You can & will go from sitting to on all fours & can move to get something you want. But 99% of the time, you’re content staying still {that is unless Sister tries to run you over}. You’ve begun pulling up on things {the exersaucer, play mat, me} & took steps multiple times last weekend while holding both your Cici & your Pops’ hands. I’m not ready for that Buddy!

I can’t wait to see what you’re being eight months brings us!

Zach: Seven Months

Our Zach. He’s Mommy’s boy for sure. He likes others: his daycare ladies, his Daddy, his Pops & Cici. But if he’s the least bit tired, hungry, or sees me while being held by someone else, he’s arms out whining until I scoop his lil booty up.

Zach sleeps pretty well. He continues to take two naps at daycare. And he usually sleeps from 830-7a getting up once or twice a night for nursing & snuggling. His favorite is to sleep on us on the couch or cuddling with me in bed 4a on, but we try to not have that happen much.

And speaking of little booty, I weighed him on his month day & he was exactly 14 pounds. I’ve transitioned him to size 2 in his Huggies naturals & he’s a size two in the honest co disposables we’re trying too.

He still fits girth size in 3 month clothes, but one piece outfits look like capris. I’ve been retiring them to pass down. And I’ve been putting him in 3-6 mo & introducing 6 more clothes. Our stash of hand-me-downs has dwindled, but I found some Carter’s deals I’m looking forward to him wearing.

Zach recently had his first high fever & doses of baby Tylenol. I’m pretty sure he had hand foot mouth only in his month. It occurred just days after his sister’s bout of it & just a day after getting his first two bottom teeth! The left front bottom popped out the Sat after I saw the right tooth Fri afternoon. It was quite a busy few days.

Zach is all but sitting unassisted. He gets into crawling position but hasn’t made any moves yet. Zachy discovered his feet within the last couple weeks but still likes eating his fingers best. He loves reading books, the birdy on the exersauser, & of course, his monkey wubba.

He loves reaching for our food. I can no longer eat while he nurses. He’s still nursing well {besides the days he had a fever}. We’ve upped his bottles to 5 oz of fortified breast milk after his daycare teachers saying he still seemed hungry after 4.5 oz. Over the last week, we stopped the zantac reflux medicine & haven’t noticed him having reflux issues.

We started solids right after Thanksgiving. First rice cereal {not a fan}, then when Mom was down a couple weekends later, I made avocado, sweet potato & banana baby food in the baby bullet. Zach loves avocado! He’s okay about the other two. I have plans to try him with organic purchased pouches & jar food over the Christmas holiday.

Happy 7 months my littlest buddy! {Will add photos soon}

Yesterday

Two big things happened yesterday.

Lucy was officially diagnosed by our pediatrician as having Hand Foot Mouth. And an unrelated eye infection requiring antibiotic drops to boot. She’s handled the blisters & rashes on her feet, toes, ankles, bottom & fingers well. We haven’t seen any in her mouth, thankfully. She’d been fever free until last night when it spiked pretty high & it’s around 100 now. Poor girl. She’s getting lots of cuddles from me & her Pops.

Were also thankful that so far Zach hasn’t showed any symptoms of getting sick. My dad drove down Wed night to help since J had two big days at work yesterday & today. That’s been great, so I didn’t have to drag Lucy out while still taking Zach to & from daycare.

Our second discovery happened while getting Zach yesterday evening. He was finishing a bottle when I arrived, I burped him & as I was wiping away a little spit up, I realized a little spit up wasn’t wiping away on him bottom gum. Holy crap, y’all. To my surprise, he has a tooth! ! I knew there were buds down there but didn’t think it’d happen so soon. Nor did I notice any extra fussing from our super smiley lil guy. He’s shy about showing off his new tooth, but I was able to catch it {very blurrily} this morning to share.

Six Month Appointment & First Solids

This is a follow up to both my six month Z & L updates & my overwhelmed post from earlier this week. Stick around to the end for some funny photos!

Here’s their official stats for 6 months. Lucy weighed 15 lb 7 oz & was 25.5 inches long. She’s between the 25-50 percentile in both categories.

Zach weighed 13lb 3 oz & was 25 inches long. Zach’s caught up to Lucy in length for the first time & is in the 25 percentile there. He’s most definitely still our skinny guy though at still under the 1 percentile in weight. He’s following his own growth curve well, so for now the doctor isn’t concerned.

The doctor felt they were doing great or even above where she’d think they’d be for six month but really 4.5 months when you adjust for them being 6 weeks early. She thought they’d be up & cruising & crawling by the time she sees them next at 9 months.

They did great for their standard & flu shots, crying less than before & recovering well in our arms. Only disappointment was they got denied from getting the RSV vaccine. They were deemed too healthy of preemies {this is clearly a good/bad thing}.

The pediatrician at their six month appointment Tuesday said for us to go ahead & start solids. Starting with rice cereal for a couple weeks before incorporating veggies & fruits. I was excited to have a plan.

Since I was already late into work due to their appointment & Tuesday are now my long lunch days for December, I went ahead & checked off grocery shopping off my to-do list at that time too. I hit up Whole Foods {it’s called Whole Paycheck for a reason, people, but it’s damn delicious} for a few items for quick lunches & dinners. I also wanted to buy organic rice cereal there. They had Earth’s Best oatmeal & rice/oatmeal/fruit combo but the doctor had said stick with just rice cereal at the beginning.

I went to Harris Teeter next where they had Earth’s Best rice cereal on sale for $2.50 a box. I bought two boxes as well as the best sub I’ve had for a while & enough food for us for breakfast, lunch & dinner for the week. Plus cupcakes because duh, you don’t pass up on sale cupcakes. I think I’ll plan to grocery shop while my in laws are in town this weekend then go with all the suggestions for curbside grocery pickup!

Z & L {unknowingly to them} all ready for cereal

We tried rice cereal with them Tuesday night. As per the doctor & box’s instructions, we mixed 1 tsp rice cereal to 5 tsp of warmed breast milk. We made that amount for each. We’ll split that amount between the two of them going forward.

First rice cereal face {on the chin & bib!}

Zach was way interested in the spoon & would be okay with Jason putting it in his mouth before he quickly stuck his tongue out & let the cereal fall out. There was definitely more on his Christmas bib than in his mouth. Once we let him hold another spoon, he was better at taking {a tiny} amount. Wednesday night, I think he was still kinda hungry from not nursing so well. He had a little rice cereal before he was crying enough that I grabbed him & solo nursed him til he was full & calm.

Here’s the procession of Lucy’s first experience of rice cereal in photos.

Lucy’s first taste of rice cereal
I can just see her thinking, “hmm what is this? Kinda smells like mommy”.
Then, BOOM. Very annoyed & sad Lucy girl.

Lucy took offense to me feeding her anything other than her beloved boob. She spit it out & more was on the bumbo & blanket than ever got into her mouth. She was pissed. And continued to be upset until I set the cereal down, picked her up & nursed her. First time was quite a fail for her, but I have to say she handled it much better Wednesday night. She still stuck her tongue out {& with it lots most of the cereal}, but she did eat some.

Zach: Six Months

How has half a year past since this little guy stole my heart?! On this, his first, Thanksgiving day, I’m so grateful for Zach’s arrival into our lives. His smiles brighten & bring joy to everyone who sees them, especially me.

Zach is such a happy baby. Even though he’s had a cold/sniffles/cough pretty much for two month straight, he continues to smile through it. Zach experienced his first ‘sick’ day last week when he went solo to the doctor {without sister for the first time}. The doctor called his sick a sinus infection & he’s taken his first round of antibiotics {since via IV in the NICU}. He took his 3 mls of amoxicillin great mixed in 20 mls of my milk morning & night.

We think his reflux issues are getting better, but we have continued to give him 1 ml of zantac mixed in with 20 mls of breast milk twice a day. He’s spit up more this month than before but doesn’t seem to bother him.

I noticed him grabbing the bottles while I gave him his mixed medicine & then daycare clued me in that he mostly holds his bottles there. So we tried it last weekend & he held his own big bottle for a feeding. It was too cute!

He’s eating well {takes all his 4 oz bottles at daycare & he’s our speed nurser}. He weighed 13 lbs with his outfit on at the pediatrician a week and a half ago. I’m looking forward to getting his official 6 month stats next week. At 13 lbs, he’s still on the {very} small side for 6 months old. He’s still wearing 0-3 month clothes {especially pjs}, 3 month Circo & Carter’s, & 3-6 month Old Navy.

We continue to put Zach in size one Huggies naturals at night. I haven’t really been using the Kissaluvs as much on the weekends although he can still squeeze into them. He wears our AIO cloth diaper stash at daycare where we pack him the more trim ones.

Zach is a great napper. Daycare laughs & says they see him more asleep than awake! He’s not a fan of napping in the crib though; he passes out during tummy time over a boppy & will sleep for two hours easy. Once we learned the boppy trick, we’ve gotten him to take two plus hour long weekend naps in a pack-n-play while laying over a boppy.

Great naps, mixed with little guy, with {maybe solved} reflux, means that he has yet to sleep for more than six hours straight. But that’s okay, I don’t mind my quiet, alone nursing time with Zach. We usually put him down {for a while in the rock-n-play in our room due to his sniffles} around 9p. He’ll wake up around 1 & 4 or sometimes just once around 230 or 3. Zach will quickly fall back asleep on me but getting him back down can be tough. This is when I will call upon Jason to wake up & take over on the couch so I can get a little more sleep before work. Yay co-parenting!

Zach has always been our tummy time rock star. He’s now up on all fours but hasn’t yet crawled. Daycare thinks he’ll be our first crawler though. It took him a bit longer to roll over ~ he was happy on his back or side. But now he’s rolling too & has happily discovered we’ll let him sleep on his stomach now that we know he can roll around.

Zach likes sitting up too. Either leaning a little on me, a boppy, the couch or a pillow or in the bumbo chair. I’m working on him sitting up on his own while we play on blankets in the evenings after daycare/work. He also has discovered toys this month. He loves to play with the ones on the exersaucer, the colorful rattle ball & crinkle elephant. Zach’s biggest toy love though are his wubbas. He will have the biggest smiles while holding onto his monkey or throwing it around.

I’ll update with the 6 month-day photos when I have a chance to upload.
