The Mermaid Chair & Art of Racing in the Rain

I finished The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd over the weekend.  I LOVED her first book, The Secret Life of Bees, when we read it in book club a couple of years ago.  So after reading that, I put Mermaid Chair on my paperback swap wish list.  Once I received the book, it sat in my TBR pile for a while.

I have to say I enjoyed the book while I was reading.  It wasn’t one of those can’t-put-it-down, love-it-forever books, but it was fine.  I loved all the coastal Carolina imagery & thought the author did a great job really making you feel like you were there {or make mewant to be there!}.  I thought the relationships between the women/friends was interesting & good.  I thought the monk character Brother Thomas/Whit was really cool.  But for the life of me right now, I can’t remember the name of the main character.  That I take as not a good sign.

My book club chose The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein as our Feb pick.  I’d never heard of it until it was chosen in December.  I have to say I really enjoyed it.  I started Art on Sunday & finished it Monday night.  I couldn’t put it down & it was a super quick read.

The Art of Racing wasn’t the racing I was expecting, but I loved that surprise!  I learned a lot more about that racing & know a little more now about what Jason’s doing/thinking as he plays & then talks to me about Forza3000.

I loved that it was from the dog, Enzo’s perspective.  I thought Denny was a good character & such as nice guy.  I wish we’d seen more from Eve’s point of view as I really wondered what she was thinking!

I hope Moekitty thinks kinda like Enzo, the super cool pup.  Does Moe have the equivalent to an evil Zebra?!

Up next is March’s book club pick: Lisa See’s Shanghai Girls.

Willow House Purchases

Have y’all heard of Willow House?  I hadn’t until recently.  It’s like Mary Kay or Pampered Chef etc but for your house.  A friend hosted a party two weeks ago & I’m so glad I went.
I got a few ideas of things to do different for my tabletops & mantel as well as purchased two organizational things: the Mail & Key Caddy & Decorative Card & Photo Display.  Currently our mail sits takes over one side of our narrow kitchen’s counter-top.  Coming up invitations and photo cards have a way of taking over our frig then going on top of our pub table.  I hope these two products solve both these issues!  The same hostess friend dropped off the products to me & I immediately put the card thing over the pantry door.  The mail holder will be hung as soon as I can find a small nail.

Anyone else bought any thing from Willow House?  I thought the vases & candle holders were pretty & if you needed new dishes or servingware that theirs was really cool. Oh & I loved their online outlet with weekly deals. Y’all know I can’t resist a deal!

Small Group

Nine women from different backgrounds with different job & careers & ages.  Ones at different places when it comes to love, marriage, & family.  Meeting at each others homes & our shared church.  That’s what we have in common.  A yearn to learn more & grow in our walk with our faith.  Some of us have been gathering for a couple years while others joined the group Monday for the first time.  I love my small group.  I look forward to Monday nights.  They help me focus & I genuinely feeling I’m a kinder, better person while I’m actively studying the Word.

Andy Stanley and his 6 week study on Taking Care of Business: Finding God at Work will help us grow & learn to incorporate God in our work lives. After one night, it has already created great discussion of our work & ways to learn more about each other and through that our faith & our God.

The second 4 week study will be Staying in Love: Falling in Love is Easy, Staying in Love Requires a Plan.  This one I’m really looking forward to.  While TTC means we are literally connecting {TMI!!} frequently, I’m hoping this study shreds some light on God’s plan to keep love in the focus of our marriage.

I’ve done a few Beth Moore studies & loved them all.  This is my first video study by anyone else.  Anyone done a Andy Stanley study or read one of his books?  This is the first for me & I’m very impressed so far.  I’d love to hear your favorites of his.
