Water Table Fun

Lucy & Zach love their water table! It was a birthday gift from their CiCi & Pops who were down this past weekend to watch them playing with it in person.

We’ve found that late afternoon is the perfect time to play on our back deck – it’s then shady & cooled off some while still warm enough for water play.

Two weekends ago, Lucy {my bath time splasher} discovered water table splashing! She & her outfit got soaked while Zach & I remained dry. So I thought I’d smartened up yesterday. I put Lucy in a bathing suit & swim diaper, but I left Zach with a cotton short-all on.

Guess who discovered splashing?! LOL! Next time, bathing suits for all!

Also note, a rarely seen in the wild serious Zach. He’s serious about his water play. Not a fan of too many toys in the water. Nor a fan of sharing his side of the table with his sister. Water table also equals lessons in sharing for our household!

He Pushes. He Walks!

The little car we got them for their birthday has been a huge hit. Lucy *loves* to be inside it. She’s learned to open the door, crawl in, honk the horn & get herself out. If she’s on the wrong side, she’ll weasle her way in without the door! It’s hilarious. She tends to be just as happy sitting as she is standing.

But her favorite thing about the car is being pushed while in it. Luckily, Zach’s favorite part about the car is pushing it! Jason was quick enough to get a video last night. {It was pj day at school & Zach wiggled out of my arms as I was changing him. So he’s still in his pj shorts & that’s it.}

{can’t get it uploaded?! But it’s crazy cute.}

These videos from Tuesday night though I think I uploaded correctly. Zach’s walking!! He’s up to 4-5 steps typically from something surdy like our coffee table to us in the middle of the floor. He’s so excited & proud of himself. We’re proud too!

This one’s from Wednesday night, mix match day at daycare. He walked his farthest yet!

Breastfeeding Update

Lucy & Zach are in week three of their 12th month {thanks baby center email for reminding me how old they’re getting}. So that’s 55 weeks of the three of us breastfeeding. Before we switch things up {again}, I thought I’d do a quick update to remember these days.

At the suggestion of our trusted pediatrician, the change will be us slowly adding whole milk {either mixed with carnation instant breakfast or done half/half with pedi sure for added calories} within the next couple weeks. & sooner than later we’ll be weaning from nursing {but don’t tell Lucy}.

Lucy’s on a streak of night wakings where breastfeeding is almost the only {& most definitely the quickest} way to get her back to sleep. I’ll side-lying nurse her so we both can be barely awake through the whole feeding. Then we just roll over & co-sleep til morning.

I try to grab her as soon as I hear her on the monitor, so we just have one awake baby. Zach tends to be a light sleeper, but if he wakes up, he’s quick to go back to sleep with just snuggles & doesn’t typically need milk. He’s actually refused nursing {overnight & in the morning} multiple times in the past week. I’m not sure if it is/was {he nursed Thurs am, overnight & Fri am!} a temporary nursing strike or if he’s beginning to wean or if he just likes how quick he can drink from a bottle better.

His strike means I’ve been pumping some in the morning before work & always after they go to bed as I’m trying to make sure we have enough breast milk for at least 7 6 oz bottles per day {so my goal is 21+ oz}.

After a couple weeks of a struggle, they’ve taken great to their half formula/half breast milk bottles. If it’s much less than half/half, Lucy will still do fine, but Zach will protest a bit.

After my last formula/ milk supply post, I tried {just about} everything to up my output. I went through a huge bottle of fenugreek pills. I drank {yummier than I was expecting} mother’s milk &/or fenugreek tea all day. I drank a lot water. And I started looking at what {& how much} I was eating.

And from all that, I realized that the pills & tea & water probably didn’t hurt matters, but what makes the most difference in my supply is food. Adding in an extra carby second breakfast means I pump an extra couple of ounces. So we keep donuts, bagels with cream cheese, & cereal/granola bars on hand. Or I swing through chicfila drive through after doing daycare drop off for a chicken biscuit & tea/lemonade. This extra mid-morning meal is key for me. I keep a healthier snack {like Greek yogurt & fruit} for after my afternoon pump.

And yes, we still use bottles. Transitioning to sippy cups will start to be in the works very soon {like starting this weekend}. We offer water or water with a lil apple juice in sippy cups at home but they play with them way more than actually drinking. I’m thinking we’ll try moving to sippy cups before we introduce whole milk. That way they don’t have two big changes at once.

Babies’ Baptism

I wished & hoped that Lucy & Zach could be baptized surrounded by family on a warm sunny day on the beach. I realized we were too dazed & sleep deprived for that to occur last summer. So I began planning for their baptism day back in the winter.

The minister that married Jason & I is from my beach grandparents’ church & he happens to preach weekly on the beach all summer beginning Memorial Day weekend Sunday. Luckily, he agreed with us how special it would be to perform this for us. John coordinated with our home church, his church session & us & we worked it out! To make it even more special, my Nana was able to be the elder who presenting & stood up with us.

The beach church service is a casual affair, but I still wanted the babies to wear special baptism outfits. After being unimpressed with what’s in stores with both the quality & price, Nana, Mom & I had an idea that ended up being out-of-this-world awesome. Nana took the remains of my mom’s wedding dress {we’d cut the bottom lace off to go around my wedding bouquet} & with the help of patterns, Nana made Lucy a beautiful dress & Zach a precious long all. Y’all, it made me tear up thinking of the historical & family significance of those outfits. They’re even more gorgeous in person than in my mind or the photos.

Lucy went first. Then it was Zach’s turn.

Code Name Verity

Jamie from book club recommended Code Name Verity to us. I sadly hadn’t quite finished it for book club last Wednesday night. My follow book nerds kindly didn’t spoil it for me & I will do my best to act on turn.

Code Name Verity is of the young adult genre {I’m turning into a bit of a #YAbooknerd right now}. But the subject matter & story aren’t of the cheesy YA variety. This historical fiction novel takes place mostly in the 1940s following two English/Scottish girls during WWII.

Their roles in the war & it being from a British perspective were new ones for me. I loved hearing a war story from a strong female perspective {actually two perspectives}. I loved the friendships. And I loved that the author really tried to be as authentic as possible & she even describes just how so in the afterward.

My book club has read a good deal of WWII novels. Code Name Verity is now up there as one of my favorites. {I say one of because the memoir Unbroken will be hard if not impossibly so to top.} I’m actually looking forward to re-reading this {& I never reread} to search out & understand more of the beginning & also discover foreshadowing I know I overlooked. Code Name Verity was really good. It was another quick read that I had a hard time putting down. I actually am thinking about the characters days later & missing reading their story. That’s a sign of a well written & enjoyed book.
