BlogHer Book Club: Slow Love

When I received the email from BlogHer Book Club about Dominique Browning’s new novel, Slow Love, I jumped on the chance to read & review it. Slow Love arrived on my door step just in time to be the perfect weekend beach read.

My typical reading style is rushed. I skip letters, words, & skim through paragraphs. I always have. Slow Love reminded me to slow down. To enjoy the moments, the “the”s & even, as she said, the letter “t”.

The memoir begins as Dominique’s life is taking drastic twists: losing her beloved career, lifestyle, & home. She’s also oscillating & reminiscing on her love affair with Stroller.

I’m still thinking about the muffins chapter. Y’all know I love muffins {& husband adores blueberry ones}. I’d love to slow down life enough to try making all the ones in my cook books.

As a lover of books & reading, I was right there with her {in my pajamas too} about how hard it is to get rid of your literary loves. Like Dominique, “When I read, everything makes sense. Sometimes the world in a book seems more real than the world in which I live”. I was nodding along with those lines; so much so that I {the never-mark-in-a-book girl} turned down the page to remember those sentences.

If you’ve had the chance to read Slow Love or want to learn more, jump over to BlogHer’s Slow Love discussion where you can also get to know Dominique.

This was a paid review for BlogHer Book Club, but the opinions expressed are my own.

DIY Blog Critique

Have you about about Melissa from momcomm.com’s new DIY Blog Critique e-book?

I’m so glad Melissa is not only local, but someone I’d call a friend {we’re even FB official ha, ha}. She doesn’t know {yet} that I’m writing this, but from the first time I saw one of her popular blog critiques I knew she was talented. When she shared with our local bloggy group that she was working on an e-book, I knew I’d be one of her first purchasers, especially after she shared a preview page with us {on fonts~no Comic Sans please}.

You don’t have to be like me & stay up until 1am rushing through the first 17 of the 43 points because you just can’t stop. You can slowly go through them in a weekend, one a night, or however you want. This e-book is simple enough for new bloggers & with enough great content to keep bloggy veterans engaged. It will work if you’re still using blogger, wp.com, or have made the switch to wp.org.

I’m enjoying the subtle changes the DIY critique e-book has pushed me to make here. So far I’ve changed up my side bars & menus. I reviewed, analyzed & appreciated my design, header & colors. I’m still happy with my choices there. I’m behind-the-scenes focusing on SEO, post titles & working on font. Up next is the content portion which I know will make me push myself, so I’m looking forward to a free weekend to go though that section.

Momcomm is a great resource for all bloggers {not just moms} & if you haven’t already, go look at her e-book. It’s worth the introductory price of $14 {she’s talking about raising the price later this year}. If you’re not sure today, I’ve posted her badge on my sidebar to the right if you want to come back & check it out later.

I purchased Melissa’s e-book myself with my own money. I admire & like Melissa & her e-book enough that I joined her affiliate program & will make almost enough for a small Sbux hot tea if you purchase though my link, but even if I was making nothing, I’d still be sharing with y’all the awesomeness of her e-book without Melissa’s prompting.

Welcome to ShopAtHome.Com

I met Carole from ShopAtHome.com while in San Diego {she had a penthouse suite at the Hard Rock Hotel & we enjoyed champagne over shopping chats}.

After showing me the deals available at ShopAtHome.com, I couldn’t wait to sign up & share the best of the deals with y’all. If you’re new to ShopAtHome.com, it’s free to register & you get $5 credit with your first purchase. You don’t have to download the toolbar, but it is helpful to get the best coupon deals.

Here’s a few of the current WILD ones. 20% cash back for petmeds. I’m hoping they sell Moe’s food so I can stock up. 12% cash back at DSW if new fall boots are calling your name.

This deal *might* be sold out, so go quick & look, but free {yep FREE} flip flops from JCPenney.

My favorite of their weekly deal is 30% off Old Navy {with code THANKS} & 3% cash back from ShopAtHome.com. I love ON for stocking up on basics: tanks, tops, scarves. This deals perfectly in time for their new fall stuff too.

ShopAtHome.com is also a great place to find Target coupons & they’re doing 6% cash back until 8/29/11! Hello new fall shoes, find your new home with me!

I’m still learning the ends & outs of this website. But I’ll try to give y’all a heads up if I see any great deals while not bugging y’all about it too much.

Disclosure: I am a member of ShopAtHome.com‘s VIB affiliate program & will make pennies for your clicks. But I sincerely love deals & ShopAtHome.com, those opinions no one can buy.

Saved My Feet

We roomies knew going into BlogHer that conferences meant learning, growing, & having lots of fun. They also meant lots of standing of your feet & a lot of walking. Oh so true.

We soon made it our quest to have cute, comfortable post-party flats. Enter After Flats. We talked as a group of four bloggers with different backgrounds & blog focuses & friends, how great it would be to not only have After Flats for ourselves but to also be able to share them with our bloggy friends.

Miranda & I met with the owner of After Flats Thursday midmorning. While After Flats is a relatively new company, I was impressed with his enthusiasm & willingness to work with us. We picked up business cards & 24 pairs; gold ones for the four roomies & 20 red pairs to give to preselected {so we’d have the right sizes} friends.

After walking three miles in heels Thursday, I was loving my After Flats. Heck all four of us roomies were. Over & over all weekend long, it was so fun to see out bloggy friends sporting their new After Flats. Fadra slipped them on during Social Soiree, Linz & Krystal wearing theirs after People’s Party, & here I am wearing them & carrying my shoenicorns in their clutch-turned-shoe-holder-bag Saturday night. After using them three nights straight, mine are still in great condition & ready to be used at my brother’s wedding if not before! If you’re interested, visit After Flats website, facebook & twitter.

After Flats

Disclosure: After Flats gave us pairs of shoes for our & our friends’ use. While I agreed to discuss my receiving of them, my thoughts & opinions are honest & truely my own.
