Zach: Three Months

Oh Zachy-poo. I thank God for this easy going little guy. He’s content just about anywhere you put him: boppy, rocknplay, bouncy seat, swing, playmat, our arms or just a blanket on the floor. I brought out his tiger wubbanub last week & he has a new love. He cuddles it even if the paci falls out while he’s sleeping.

And speaking of sleeping, he’s cool there too. Happy on us. Good on rocknplay. Likes the packnplay if Lucy’s not in it. And he does well in his crib too- slept their Sun night for 5 hours. He still doesn’t sleep the 7 hour stretches that Lucy will {he usually wakes every 3-4 hours still}, but he did give us 12-6 Mon so maybe its coming soon.

{taken one day late 8/22}

Eating is currently our hard spot with lil Z. He’s hungry & that’s when he’s the most vocal, but he also has silent reflux & some lack-of-poo tummy issues. So every feeding is a toss up. Some days, he’s a breastfeeding champ. He actually does better nipple shieldless than his sister. Other feedings though, he’ll just scream at the boob, but take his reflux meds sneaked in 1oz breastmilk bottle fine. After trying to get out burps with pats, bouncing, walks, if he’s still screaming, I’ll have husband or MIL give him a breastmilk bottle. That’s happened more than I like recently, but I reassure myself knowing he’s getting my milk either way.

But the boy is growing! While still hovering around or a little below the 1 percentile, he’s more than doubled his birth weight & I think around 10-11 lbs now. Zach can fit into some NB clothes still but the pants/sleeves are getting short. The onesie above is the same one Lucy wore in her 3 month photo for comparison. To give him footie room, his sleepers are 0-3 months. He’s still fitting in the extra small & NB cloth diaper covers. But we have him using huggies naturals in size 1 over nights.

Lucy: Three Months

Our Lucy girl. She’s introduced us to quite a personality this last month. She knows what she wants & isn’t afraid to tell us~ that’s right, she’s gotten quite vocal with coos, cries & screams. She loves to be held & walked. No sitting down & rocking will chill her out. Reading books to her is okay. Bouncy seat is okay but without the vibration. She loves our ceiling (yay 80s popcorn), the fan & mobiles. She will chat away with anything overhead. It’s hilarious & so cute.

She loves the boob, breastfeeding, bottled breast milk, however she can get it. And lots. No worries with her missing a meal. After kinda caring less about the hospital pacis, I gave her a lamb wubbanub last week & she’s a fan. But she knows it’s not mom, so it’ll only pacify her for a bit.

Lucy is wearing 0-3 & 3 month clothing & Carter’s skinny 3 months outfits I have to stretch to get on her. She was in the 25% for all at their last appt but she’s our ‘chubby’ baby. We guestimate that she’s around 12-13 lbs now. She’s wearing size 1 disposables overnight & in cloth diapers during the day. We can still squeeze her precious leg rolls into XS & NB cloth covers but those days are limited.

To follow up on my unfinished Elusive Sleep post, I’ve given myself grace, tried to remove the self given pressure to get her to sleep in her crib. She’s sleeping well in the packnplay usually from 12-7a after fighting sleep from around 9p. We’ll give her boob or bottle around 7a & she will go back to sleep for a bit. She typically wakes up happy with big smiles. This week, she’s done great during the day following a eat, play, nap routine. The naps have been on us, the couch on a boppy or in the rocknplay, but again with me taking off the pressure, I’m just happy that she’s contently sleeping.

Happy three month baby girl!

Elusive Sleep

This could also be titled, will they ever use those nursery cribs?

Jason started back to work Monday. So last week I started freaking out getting nervous about them & I getting overnight sleep.

I guess I need to back up. Nights one & two home with us, Lucy ‘slept’ in a packnplay in our room. She’s a loud sleeper, we were nervous parents, no one really slept. When Zach came home that Sunday, we’d pulled out the rocknplays. And we quickly discovered why they’re so popular. Both napped & slept in them well. We set up our den like a no joke ‘war room’. Complete with changing table, coffee table turning baby catch all, TV & lamp on 24/7, kitchen & laundry room super close by. And that has worked. Really well for weeks. Until within last couple weeks when we realized L was sleeping better on us or stretched out over a boppy. So we pulled the barely used packnplay out of our room & added it into the war room. Lucy began napping & transitioned to sleeping there with Zach still in the rocknplay.

Slowly, we’ve tried to introduce Lucy to her crib. She’s last fifteen minutes here or there until one night last week she slept in her crib for four hours. I was thrilled thinking we’d turned a corner. Then she went a couple nights where my laying her in the crib might as well been a torture chamber. To save our sanity & give us a few extra minutes of sleep, back into the packnplay she went. She also began sleeping in longer stretches over night. Like last weekend three nights in a row of midnight to between 5 & 7 am while in packnplay. Proud momma right here.

Zach & his littler, reflux tummy hasn’t been able to go a five or six hour stretch. He’s still typically wanting to nurse every three to four hours overnight. But this week, I was feeling like we were doing him a disservice keeping him in the rocknplay while sister was all stretched out. Over the weekend, I placed both in the packnplay where they slept for three hours together, but their combined size had them both on the verge of rolling in the middle. So no more co-sleeping in the packnplay. Zach’s slept in the packnplay on his own a few times & within the past week, we’ve put him in his crib a few times with success too.

But long story short, they’re not in their cribs thus not under the video monitors thus I’m still ‘sleeping’ on the couch with them in the war room. Tell me, I’ll get to get back in bed eventually right?!

Lucy: Two Months

Two months of life for this little girl. My lover of food, we never worry she’s not growing! We’ll know for sure at their two month check up next week, but I’d guess she’s past the 10lb mark.

Lucy has grown out of newborn clothes except for the few dresses that are now bordering on too short. After realizing her legs couldn’t stretch out in NB sleepers, the footless pants had become capris, onesies couldn’t snap, we officially boxed up all of those clothes. {Let me know if you need NB girl clothes, my friends are PG with boys now}

She wears cloth diapers almost exclusively during the day. We’ve been using kissaluv size 0 fitteds {on the second snap still} & a mixture of Thirties smallest covers, Flip covers & Rumparoos new born covers. At night she’s wearing size 1 disposable diapers as of two weekends ago.

She happily shocked us three times this week by sleeping in a five hour stretch from around 1-6a. Fingers crossed she keeps this up. She falls asleep best on us, on our chest. Lucy’s not a huge fan of chillin in the boppy but she’ll tolerate it for a bit. The swing is hit or miss- some days she’s a fan & it’ll lull her to sleep, others she screams after a minute. The baby Einstein mat is a hit. As is postfeeding tummy time- she falls asleep after a minute. Due to tummy time & chillin on us, she has pretty good neck control.

I think due to them being six weeks early, I’m not sure baby center development stats are correct for them yet so I’m not going to list those yet. But she has started cooing a little this week & looking at us as well as following us when we walk past both with head & eyes.

Zach: Two Months

Zach, my little guy, is getting not so little. I’d guess he’s more than doubled his 4lb2oz birth weight. I’m looking forward to seeing if he’s jumped up to more than the 1% for weight, height & head at our doctor’s appointment this week.

Zach is now firmly in newborn clothes. He grew out of the preemie clothes length-wise a couple of weeks ago, but now he’s filling out the feet & tummy of the newborn sleepers.

After their one month appointment {at six weeks}, when we learned he was 7lbs, we switched him from the too small preemie disposable diapers into newborn ones {Huggies & Pampers are our favorites}. I also started him with cloth diapers that day. His first cloth was a size one Applecheeks but most days he uses the fitted Kissaluvs with x-small covers.

From the beginning, the NICU nurses were commenting on how strong he was & that hasn’t changed. His head/neck control is getting so good. He also likes to practice standing up. He follows us with his eyes & will sometimes turn his head to follow us. He loves to cuddle & falls asleep on us most of the time & definitely naps best on our arms, chests or laps. Boppy pillows work well for him to hang out or take a lil nap in. He tolerates the swing & likes the play mat pretty well.

He had tons of blond hair on his head & all over his shoulders, arms & back when he was born. We’ve noticed that the body hair is almost gone & he’s now sporting more of a old man mullet {bald on top & thin in the back}. Zach now has a wee double chin & the fabulous arm rolls we’ve been working hard getting him to make.

We {& our pediatrician} diagnosed him with silent reflux a couple weeks after a week of him screaming through feedings & whenever he was laying flat. Thanks to Zantac twice a day {hidden in 15ml of breast milk}, he seems to be feeling so much better. He still has occasional rough feedings but those are less frequent; I think due both to him getting bigger & the meds.
